I just wanted to let everyone know that we are all off on our own with our various host families. Following a quick couple of hours sightseeing at Nara (world's largest Buddha statue, more tame deer, giant statues of ancient warriors) we hopped back on the bus and headed straight for Naga high school. It was probably the quietest we've been the entire trip. To be honest, most of the students would love to continue traveling as a group. 9 days living with a bunch of strangers is admittedly a bit daunting.
The welcome ceremony at Naga was also a bit interesting. The bus arrived, we stashed our baggage, and filed (with applause) into a classroom full of the host families and few staff members. After a couple of quick introductory speeches (mine was quite elequoent...I might add...especially for making it up on the spot), each student's name was called. They all came to the front, shook hands with their host families, smiled for a quick picture, and then were whisked away through the door. No reception. No goodbyes. Just straight out of the door and into waiting cars. It was definitely a bit surreal as I watched everyone get carted through the door with looks of panic and desparation. Actually, it was pretty humorous. Everyone was definitely in good (if slightly nervous) spirits.
So, that's where we are at. Everyone's scattered across the city of Naga. Naga itself reminds me quite a bit of Issaquah--a couple of main roads, lots of suburban shops, grocery stores, etc. All of the students should know how to get in touch with me if they need to, I am staying with the Vice Prinicipal of Naga High...which should be a bit of an akward adventure in itself. But, I am not predicting any troubles. All of the families we are teamed up with looked completely sane and normal...at least let's hope.
Til next time...

Hey Brea are you surviving? You didn't seem to have any qualms at all before you left but the actual moment must have been tough. It looks like your group was having a great time. Love Mom
I am with Quinn...so far, so good. My family is pretty great. Their English is pretty minimal, but we are getting by--actually having some decent conversations. The food is the best I've had all trip! Tempura, homemade soup, lots of rice. Remember, do your best to eat what they give you...I've found it has been pretty easy to say whether or not I like something. Usually I just get laughs if I don't....in the end, rice is very filling! Hope everyone is doing well. I miss you guys! See you tomorrow!
