Another great day

Surprisingly, we've got wireless internet on the small island of Miyajima...who would of thought? Today was another eventful one. We left Kyoto early this morning, took a bullet train to Hiroshima, and then a (rainy) ferry to Miyajima. The island is full of surprises--tame deer wander the winding streets, shrines sit on stilts over the water, and a giant red gate "floats" about 200 hundred yards offshore. Our group is doing fantastic. Everyone is eager to see the sights and willing to work as a group. Dinner tonight was especially good...lots of noodles, lots of udon, lots of stuff nobody's quite sure about. We are all getting more comfortable communicating with the locals everyday. Tomorrow take the ferry to Hiroshima, visit the memorials and see as much of the city as we can...it should make for another busy one.

Baloo, what's up with the lack of pictures? Give these folks back home what they want.

We're jealous--Sam, please take pictures of PEOPLE as well as buildings this time--including you--future generations want to see your face....your sisters miss you--David too--way too quiet here. Sounds fantastic. Mom & Dad
Gloria says all the pets miss you too.

I am thinking of you all today in Hiroshima, and of Hiroshima 62 years ago, as I finish reading Dr. Michihiko Hachiya's Hiroshima Diary (written 1945, published in English 1955). I have been thinking also of my beloved father, who would have turned 105 two days ago, and who helped to create the bomb which was dropped there. What a strange web of violence we are all enmeshed in!

It makes me happy to think of you there on a journey of sisterhood and brotherhood, and I join all of you today, I know, in hopes for a more peaceful future.

This year as every year -- as you may know -- there will be a Hiroshima observance (From Hiroshima to Hope)on the evening of August 6, with lantern floating at dusk, at Green Lake Park in Seattle. It is always a very beautiful and moving event. It takes place just south of the Boathouse Theater on the west side of the lake.

Don't worry, if Sam's not taking pictures...we are. There will be plenty to go around.
